People-focused
At Woolwich we didn’t just design a station – we helped to create a place. Our new station, alongside public realm improvements on the Royal Arsenal site, have repaired broken connections with Woolwich town centre, and are at the heart of a regeneration programme that has transformed the neighbourhood.
Inventive
The station’s robust architecture responds to the former military buildings that surround it, many of which are Grade I and Grade II listed. Look closely and you can find details celebrating this heritage – such as coloured bands around the platform columns that reference regiments that were based at the Arsenal site.
Responsible
Woolwich station is a key element in a masterplan for the former Royal Arsenal site which includes 3,750 new homes, as well as new cultural, heritage, commercial and leisure projects. Thousands of tonnes of earth excavated from the site were also used to help create a new RSPB reserve in Essex.
The station is a bold combination of materials, texture and form. The result is that even small accents of colours make an impact, simply establishing a distinctive character.
