The CTBUH (Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat) Annual Awards programme recognises projects, practices, and individuals that have made extraordinary contributions to the advancement of tall buildings and the urban environment.

Presented at the annual CTBUH conference in October, projects are recognised that achieve sustainability and human well-being at the highest and broadest level. Judged by an international panel of experts, Awards of Excellence are bestowed across many categories, including Best Tall Building, Urban Habitat, Innovation, Structure, and Construction.

Lawrence East TOC (Transit-Oriented Communities)'s North, Middle and South Towers were recognised in the programme, with Design Director Paul James and Computational Designer Shahé Gregorian collecting the award at the CTBUH conference in Toronto.

The awards programme aspires to provide a more comprehensive and sophisticated view of these industry-leading projects, drive improvements in every aspect of performance, and showcase those that deliver the greatest benefit to the individuals and communities who interact with them.

Lawrence East marks a very significant step forward in Ontario’s approach to linking transit and housing. The site itself comes with challenges, but it also brings a great deal of opportunity – which is ultimately fuelled and led by Infrastructure Ontario. It sets a new example for how Toronto suburbs can grow in a way that is inclusive, transit-friendly and future-focused. For us it’s a privilege to be a part of this programme and contribute to shaping this vision, and to be a part of the conversation about what urban development can be become.

Paul James, Design Director

Paul also participated in a panel at the CTBUH conference, presenting on 'Suburban Skylines: The Rise/Reckoning of Toronto’s Tall Communities' organised by ULI Toronto and CTBUH. Moderated by Leigh McGrath of Urban Strategies, the panel also featured Christopher Fay of 10N Collective sister practice SvN Architects + Planners, Michael Attard of Hariri Pontarini Architects, and Andrew Lee of SOM. Paul spoke on the challenges and opportunities of TOC and the importance of public engagement.
